It's with deep sadness that the club learnt today of the passing of Miriam Sorohan, a long time friend of the Gers. While her husband Joe got a lot of the plaudits for his great service as a player and supporter, Miriam was also central in terms of her support at matches and at social events.
In 1986 for example, when the Gers won the Murphy Cup, Miriam played host to the team when they all turned up at her front door and, when eventually they departed, they left well fed and watered. She was great company especially for the "Gers widows" when they met up at the annual social, where she took a great interest in the families of those gathered while the menfolk talked football.
In more recent years she was so welcoming of club members who called out to the house where there was no shortage of banter about the GAA and other less important matters.
For the many members of our club who met her, we can say today that we were fortunate and we share a sense of loss with Joe and with their children Irene, Deirdre, Valerie, Celine and Claire and to Shane and Gavin (who in their youth lined out with the Gers). They have lost a great person.
