CLUB Policy on 'PLAYING UP'

As of 01 January 2025, the revised Club Policy on 'playing up' is as detailed below.
Please note that the Playing Up Policy differs between GAA, LGFA and Camogie, and indeed our Club's Policy on 'Playing Up' in LGFA differs from official LGFA policy. Your Committee is happy that our Club Policy for LGFA (which is stricter) best fits within our Club Ethos to encourage and support our members whilst playing our games. As Camogie 'Playing up' rules do not currently apply to our Club (due to the young age of our players), these will be revised on an ongoing basis.

General Principles:
  • Natural Age Group: Players should primarily play and train with their natural age group.
  • Playing Up" Exceptions: "Playing up" is permitted in specific circumstances, such as when a team needs extra players for a game.
  • Prioritisation of 'correct age' Players: When "playing up," clubs are encouraged to prioritise players who are at the correct age level!
  • Clear Communication: Mentors should communicate the policy's application to both parents and players.

LGFA ‘playing up’ Policy

 Academy – U13
Grades are deemed Under 7, 9, 11, 13.
Participants may play up one age grade; i.e., Under-7 may play at Under-9 level; Under-9 may play at Under-11 level; Under-11 may play at Under-12 & Under-13 age levels in line with Gaelic Games Go Games policy https://ladiesgaelic.ie/learn/go-games/ .
 U14 – U18, Adult
Grades are deemed Under 14, 16, 18 and Adult.
Participants can play a maximum of two grades above their own age grade in their final eligible year of that age group* i.e., Under 14s can play under 14, 16, 18, if they are 14 years old during the year of participation in the above grades. Under 16 can play Under 16, 18 and adult, if they are 16 years old during the year of participation in the above grades. Under 18s can play under 18 and adult.
Mentors of the older team must receive permission from the mentors of the players current team (if under 16, the u16 mentors), the players parents and/or guardians and the player, in that order. For instances of fixture and training clashes with playing up training/games, players and coaches must prioritise that age group’s training and games over ‘playing up.’
Exceptions can only be made on a case-by-case basis and must be approved in writing by the Coaching sub-committee AND one of the Club Secretary, Juvenile Secretary or Children’s Officer.

*Final eligible year: for example, an U14 girl MUST be 14 in the relevant year to play up to U18. Girls who will be 13 in that year cannot play up 2 Age groups.

GAA Playing Up Policy

Participants may play up to the team above them (to a maximum of two age grades where there is no team at the year ahead (merged years))
for example
Under 8's may play at their own age grade plus Under 9 or Under-10 , but only at U10 when there is no U9 team.
U12's can play at U12 or U13 but only at U14 if there is no U13 team.

Adult Codes: A player can typically play senior GAA (Gaelic Athletic Association) at the club level when they turn 17 years old, provided they have already celebrated their 17th birthday before January 1st of the championship year. This means that a player who turns 17 after January 1st of a given year would not be eligible to play senior football or hurling at the club level until the following championship.
For clarification, Year 1 Minors (17 in that calendar year) are NOT permitted to play Senior GAA.  Only Year 2 Minors (18 in that Calendar year) are permitted to play up - subject to Parental approval and approval from Coaches of both Minor & Adult teams.
